Memorial Day, the Kickoff to Summer in New York

Memorial Day, the Kickoff to Summer in New York

Memorial Day holds a significant place in the hearts of Americans as an eagerly awaited holiday. It not only grants a well-deserved three-day weekend but also symbolizes the start of summer.

When does Memorial Day occur?

Memorial Day is observed on the final Monday of May each year. This national holiday is celebrated throughout the United States, with the dates varying annually. In 2019, Memorial Day falls on May 27, while it will be observed on May 25 in 2020, and this year on May 29, 2023.

The purpose of designating a fixed day for this holiday, starting in 1971, was to provide Americans with an extended weekend. Consequently, New York City often experiences a temporary decrease in its population as residents take advantage of this opportunity.

What is the significance of Memorial Day?

Memorial Day serves as a tribute to all American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield during various conflicts worldwide. The tradition of this commemoration emerged in 1868, three years after the conclusion of the Civil War. Its aim was to honor the memory of soldiers from both the Union and Confederate sides, with the intention of fostering reconciliation between the North and South. Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday was initially observed on May 30, a date selected specifically as it did not coincide with any specific battle or event.

How is Memorial Day celebrated?

Memorial Day is marked with grand ceremonies, particularly in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. The President of the United States participates in a memorial service held at Arlington National Cemetery.

In New York City, like in many other cities across the country, military parades are organized to pay homage to fallen soldiers. If you happen to be in New York on this day, make your way to Brooklyn to witness the city's prominent parade, organized by the Memorial Day Parade Committee. The 152nd edition of this spectacular procession will commence at 11 a.m., starting from the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 78th Street in Brooklyn.

However, Memorial Day represents more than solemn military remembrance alone. In a less formal manner, it also signifies the commencement of the summer season. Many establishments and activities transition to summer hours during this weekend. For instance, Governors Island opens its doors for nighttime enjoyment on this special day. It serves as a reminder that summer is just around the corner!
